Gigondas

Grand Vin

The vines of our Grand Vin are mostly planted on the North-Eastern part of the appellation between 250 to 400 m of altitude. Grenache is the dominating grape variety side by side with syrah and mourvèdre. A good concentration of the wine comes naturally with a yield at about 40 hl/ha.

The grapes are hand harvested and carefully destemmed before a long maceration – all this contributes to a perfect extraction of the grape’s ripe components. We chose a partial ageing in foudres (big oak barrels) and tanks. Bottling will take place after 12 months of ageing. The bottles are corked with high quality natural corks.

The nose makes you think of the hills in Gigondas: pin, rosemary, thyme, dry grass between limestone pebbles… Then comes a round of liquorice, myrtle and blackcurrant with notes of cacao and smoke. The palate opens discretely, then becomes more and more powerful and finishes with a great length.

Keep until 2023.

Guide Hachette 2023 *
Well served by a bouquet as fine as it is complex (rose, spices, toasted toast), this Gigondas is full, round, fresh and gently tannic. A balanced and highly digestible profile, ideal for spicy dishes, tandoori chicken or lamb chawarma.

90 Decanter
Simple plum fruits, but very fine and elegant on your palate. Well balanced. Sweet plum coulis fruit, lightly spiced
Blind tasted by Matt Walls for Decanter

***(*) Full red; the nose has a tone of blackberry, a smoky, ground coffee beans air, stands tall in the glass, has scope. The palate is swept with freshness, gives a running, slightly clipped display of mixed berries with a keen set of tannins, continues on that basis. It has the Gigondas virtue of clarity, and will move into shape, its garrigue influences and well-defined manner appealing.

2017 vintage

91-93/100 Wine Advocate - "Aged in a mix of concrete and wood of varying sizes, the 2017 Gigondas Grand Vin hints a toast and mocha on the nose, then gives way to ripe cherries. A blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, it's full-bodied, creamy and supple, showing a touch of warmth on the long finish"
Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (August 2018)

92/100 Wine Enthusiast
In this wine, profoundly ripe, almost ruddy, flavors of preserved plum and cherry are shaded by hints of beet roots and cherry-cola spice. A bold, brooding blend of grenache, syrah and mourvèdre framed by ripe but chewy, persistent tannins, it should meld and improve through 2030.
Wine Enthusiast - Anne Lee C. Iijima (Janvier 2020)

2016 vintage

90-92/100 Wine Advocate - The 2016 Gigondas Grand Vin shows traces of vanilla on the nose, then follows those up ripe stone fruit and cherry flavors, a creamy, full-bodied palate and just a touch of alcoholic heat on the finish.
Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (October 2017)

2015 vintage

16/20
Bettane+Desseauve

88-90/100 - Possibly outstanding, the 2015 Gigondas Grand Vin is a big, rich, mouth-filling effort that has low acidity, a voluptuous, decadent texture and loads of black raspberry, licorice and crushed violets aromas and flavors. It has potential.
Wine Advocate

91/100 - Fresh, starting with a perfumy hint, followed by enticing red currant, raspberry and blackberry puree flavors. Light lavender and tobacco accents chime through the finish. Drink now through 2025.

2 stars **
"This Great Wine does not usurp its name, and if it requires a little air to reveal itself fully, the wait is rewarded with remarkable finesse and complexity of aromas: cooked fruit, rosemary, mocha, vanilla. Generous, full-bodied, dense and fresh, it combines elegance and power and ends with a long, spicy note that leaves the memory of a wine with a strong character. The pleasure is prolonged in a beautiful sweetness wrapping a powerful mouth , fleshy and balanced.”
