In the Côte Rôtie appellation the hills are as steep as those in the Alpes. So sometimes the winegrowers behave like mountain top explorers. You see them scaling the steep slopes to go pull weeds and tying themselves together before going to harvest. These men and women also have the humility of highlanders: they know how to reduce themselves in front of their wines which are often times at the summit!
We created "Face Sud" (“Facing South”) as one opens a new path. The grapes come from a very steep little plot of vines embedded between Ampuis and Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône. The southern orientation, a gentle wine making, a maturation that takes its time and bottling without filtering... Total respect is given to this wine and its terroir.
Using a carafe is necessary, undoubtedly required, if possible in the morning for dinner, because in its youth this wine will benefit from being aired out. Face Sud reveals itself with time, and offers aromas of great refinement: fig, plum, candied cherry, anise, with hints of chocolate and coffee.
Face Sud is sold only on allocation, and delivered either in individual wooden case, or in wooden case of 6 bottles.

95/100 "Dark and alluring, with warmed fig, anise-soaked plum and black cherry reduction notes forming a large core, while warm ganache and Turkish coffee hints take this to the darker side of the spectrum. Everything is integrated and there's swath of alder and tobacco elements coursing through the finish, along with alluring game and incense accents."

92-94 - "As to the reds, the standout is the 2015 Côte Rôtie Face Sud, which is 100% Syrah aged all in barrel. It's easily the most concentrated and lengthly, with seriously good aromas and flavors of liquid blackberries, blueberries, crush rocks, graphite and violets. It has first-rate tannin quality and is a certainly outstanding wine."

Guide Bettane desseauve 2018
We like it with truffles and tagliatelle, a farm chicken or soft rind cow's cheeses like Brie de Meaux or Pont-Lévêque. It will keep up to 15 years without losing its balance.
